Travis Cuvelier is a gifted athlete with a big heart and competitive spirit. Since he was old enough to walk, Travis has been playing sports through organized leagues, school programs, as well as in the backyard or in the local park with friends.
He loves to get outdoors and be active whenever he can. Throughout his youth, Travis has participated in sports including:
- Little League Baseball
- Soccer
- Football
- Lacrosse
While he loves playing all kinds of sports, Travis Cuvelier developed a special passion for lacrosse from the very first time he played. He has played lacrosse for both his middle school and high school teams. He is always working hard and learning more and more about the sport to become the best lacrosse player he can be.
Along with playing sports and being active, another big part of Travis’s life is acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). In January of 2003, at the age of five, Travis Cuvelier was diagnosed with ALL, a form of cancer affecting the bone marrow and blood. With ALL, the bone marrow makes too many immature lymphocytes which are a type of white blood cell.
Travis received quality care and treatment for ALL at the Albany Medical Center Children’s Hospital in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Center. He received chemotherapy until April of 2006. Travis Cuvelier is currently in remission but continues to undergo testing.
During his treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, Travis Cuvelier was granted a wish from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Travis and his family decided to take a trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Disney World is a very popular destination for children in the Make-A-Wish Foundation program. The magic of Disney brings to life a child’s most wonderful fantasies and opens their imagination to the greatest heights. During their trip to Disney, Travis Cuvelier and his family were able to make unforgettable memories that are sure to last a lifetime.
Throughout his treatment and beyond, Travis Cuvelier has been highly active in Relay for Life and other organizations. In 2004, Travis was the Grand Marshall for Relay for Life. His team was able to successfully raise over $13,000 for the American Cancer Society. Relay for Life is an event that takes place worldwide each year attended by over 4 million people in over 20 countries. The event is meant to provide a platform for survivors, friends, and family members to:
- Celebrate what they’ve overcome
- Remember those they have lost to the disease as well as honor those who have fought or are still fighting cancer.
- Fight back and take action against a disease that has taken so much from individuals all over the world.
